Edward A. Black, 90, husband of the late Rebecca O. (Chalmers) Black, died December 23, 2017, at his home with his sister Gloria, at his side. Ed was the son of the late Ora F. Black Sr., and Mary (Hughes) Black.
Ed was a graduate of John Bapst High School where he played in all sports but excelled in football where he was known as Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside
In 1946, Ed Black and Blocky Hickson were picked to the All-State team while leading John Bapst to their only undefeated season. This was a team that nosed by Cheverus 13-12 in the final minutes of play. Ed also was All State in basketball and baseball. He played second base where he held a batting average of 667 in 1947.
Upon graduating from John Bapst, Ed went to Georgia Tech on a football scholarship. On returning to Maine from Georgia, he went to work for his father as an oiler and then became a crane operator. Ed worked for Volpe Construction in Boston, MA for seven years and returned home to start his own crane business, known as Ed Black Crane Service which he had for over forty years. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers from February 19, 1949 until his retirement.
Surviving are two brothers, Martin E. Black of Bangor, and James M. Black of Eddington; two sisters, Madeline J. St. Pierre of Manchester, NH, and Gloria J. Black of Bangor. Edward was predeceased by two brothers, Ora F. Black Jr., and Joseph L. Black; six sisters, Mary F. Plummer, Irene A. Hull, Vera T. Kelleher, Marilyn C. Gallant, Elizabeth M. McCullough, and Patricia M. Mills.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m., Thursday, December 28, 2017, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer. A Funeral Mass will be held 2 p.m., Friday, December 29, 2017 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor followed by the Rite of Committal at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer following the burial.
