I am truly sorry to read of Stephen's passing today in the BDN. Stephen was a few years ahead of me in school and I recall that we walked along the same paths to Fruit Street and Garland Street schools over the years. Stephen was kind and gentle and was surprisingly tolerant of us younger kids while we engaged in chit chat during our treks to the halls of higher learning. I remember that he proudly carried his Garland Street book/gym back with a sense of purpose that we all envied and tried to emulate as soon as we were big enough and lucky enough to get those same bags at Wright's Sporting Goods. There are a few people that are memorable to us when were kids and Stephen certainly was, and, for all the right reasons. It's no wonder to read that Stephen volunteered to help others for so many thousands of hours at St. Joseph's. My condolences to his sister, Helen, who was in my sister's class, and to his family. Rest in peace, Stephen.
