Obituary for Clarence R. Snyder, Jr. and Patricia J. Snyder

BANGOR and HANCOCK - A love story...Clarence and Pat Snyder were married for nearly 70 years and passed within hours of one another at the Veteran's Home in Bangor, Maine.

Patricia J. Snyder was born in Caribou, Maine in 1930, daughter of Levi and Vera (Watson) Russell. She passed away on September 14, 2018.

Clarence R. Snyder, Jr. was born in Bangor, Maine in 1927, son of Clarence R. Snyder, Sr. and Helen (Montgomery) Snyder. He passed away on September 15, 2018.

Pat worked many years in the Bangor School System (keeping an eye on her children) and retired from Bangor Mental Health. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as being an avid reader.

Clarence left Bangor High School to join the Navy, serving in the Seabees in the Pacific during WWII, returning to graduate like many veterans and finding his bride. He worked many years in the Bangor School system, beginning by shoveling coal into the boilers which served the old high school and library. His responsibilities grew to lead the maintenance activities of the school system, and was one of the first to receive State Master Licenses for electrical, plumbing and oil burner. He was the clerk of works for what is today the Eastern Maine Community College, becoming the first maintenance superintendent, from where he retired. In addition to his numerous positions, he was known to assist family and friends with home improvement projects as well as finding time to build four homes and one summer home for his family. In his retirement, he ran the Swan's Island Lobsterman's Co-op. Clarence enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.

Pat and Clarence lived most of their lives in Bangor, Maine and more recently in Hancock, Maine. They also enjoyed being snowbirds in Dunedin, Florida for 12 years during their retirement where they enjoyed making many new friends, various activities, and the warmer weather.

They are survived by their children: Clarence, III and his wife Jane of Brookfield, MA; Ronald and his wife Katherine of Dedham, ME; Lewis and his wife Debra of Palmyra, PA; Beth Smart and her husband Tim of Ellsworth, ME; and Jeffery of Hancock and 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. They were preceded in death by a son, Robert. Pat is also survived by sisters: Paula Dwelley; Susan Laffey and her husband Richard; Peggy Hewes and her husband Louie and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, George and a sister, Jacqueline.

They were most proud of the accomplishments of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren...Jeff and his work at Jackson Lab; Beth and her work at Cancer Care; and to be one of the only three families to have graduated three sons from Maine Maritime Academy.

There will be a private graveside service at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to a time of remembrance 12 noon to 2pm, Saturday, September 29, 2018, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor.

Memorial donations in memory of Clarence and Pat may be made to The Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401 or the Bangor Homeless Shelter, 263 Main Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
