ORONO & BANGOR – Marilyn A. Cowan (Young), 80, passed away peacefully July 16, 2018, at her home in Orono. She was born January 22, 1938, in Bangor, the daughter of Dale and Flora Mae (Homestead) Young.

Marilyn attended schools in the Orono and Brewer areas. She married James Edward Cowan Sr. on January 11, 1958. Marilyn was formerly employed by Brewer Savings Bank, and D’Lor Beauty Salon, and worked part-time for her cleaning business in private homes. She was a longtime member of Bangor High School Booster’s Club, and enjoyed following all of her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Marilyn particularly enjoyed youth sports. She enjoyed family gatherings, and was an avid Red Sox and Patriot’s fan. Marilyn enjoyed a good romance novel, crossword puzzles, and she was an avid cribbage player.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James Edward Cowan Sr.; her oldest son, Donald R. Cowan; her only bother, Wendell Young; and a daughter-in-law, Donna G. Kocur-Cowan. Surviving are her children, Lester G. Cowan and Tammy S. Bouchard, James E. Cowan Jr. and Carey R. Kennedy, Allen Cowan and wife, Caroline, Sherry Hanscom and husband, Stan, Paula J. Smith and husband, Ernie, and Lynne Speed and husband, Paul; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a special aunt, Sharon Young; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

A celebration of life to remember Marilyn will be held 2-4 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Marilyn in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Old Town Football Booster’s Club, 203 Stillwater Avenue, Old Town, ME 04468.
