The Badge

I never had the pleasure or honor of meeting Dr. Shubert in person, my only contact with him happened late last year. I had lost my dogs collar with a K9 badge on Newberry Neck Rd in Surry. It had sentimental value and I posted notices on the Neck and at the town hall. Just after we left for home, I got a call that the collar had been found with the badge still attached and it made its way home to me in Florida. I learned that Dr. Shubert was the one who found the collar and I asked the Surry clerk to pass along my thanks and email, so I could thank him in person. I had a very brief email exchange with Dr. Shubert, telling him I would love to hear the story of how and where he found the collar and expressing how much it meant to me that he had taken the time to get it back to me. I told him we would be back in the Surry area at the end of April and he said to be sure to look him up so he could tell me the story in person. When I learned of his passing today, my heart sank, knowing that I would never get the chance to meet the kind and generous stranger who went that extra step to return something to someone he did not know. Condolences to Dr. Shuberts family. The brief long distance encounter I had with him left me with such a positive feeling, I know he was an exceptional man. I wish you strength during your time of sorrow and hope that the lifetimes of memories you all must have will help you cope with your loss. Farewell,Dr. Shubert, from someone you never met, but whose life you touched nonetheless.
