Command Sergeant Major Paul E. Tardiff, husband of Gladys Marie (Dionne) Tardiff, passed away March 19, 2018. He was born in Brewer, March 24, 1932 son of Raymond E Tardiff and Marjorie V (Libby) Tardiff.
He attended Brewer schools, Cameron University, Oklahoma and the US Amy Adjutant General’s School, Indianapolis, Indiana. Served in the Maine (Bangor) Army National Guard from June 1948 to October 1951 enlisted in the Regular Army in October 1951 and served until May 1976. He was shipped to Schofield Barracks, Territory Hawaii and served in the Hawaiian Infantry until he was sent to Korea in April 1952 . In November 1952 he was wounded in North Korea and evacuated to Japan then to Fort Devens Army Hospital. Paul was eventually assigned to Bangor as an Army Recruiter.
On June 6, 1953 he married his high school sweetheart Gladys “Marie” Dionne of Old Town, ME. She would be his life- long mate and best friend.
He had assignments in Japan, Germany and numerous stateside locations including El Paso, Tx, New Orleans, La., Niagara Falls, NY. and Fort Sill, OK.
After retirement he worked as a Veterans Counselor in Oklahoma In 1983 to 1985 he was employed by Agusta International of Italy in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Gladys joined him in 1984, they spent many weekends at the Red Sea and were able to travel throughout Europe. After returning from Saudi Arabia they settled in Bangor.
He was a Life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the 3rd Infantry Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans Association, the Military Writers of America.
In 2006 his book “I Do Solemnly Swear” a biographical account of his military service was published.
His military awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Army Commendation Medal (3 awards), Armed Forces Expedition Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, numerous campaign and service medals.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons , Reginald of Debary. Fl, Martin of Bangor, Randy of Lewiston; two “special daughters,” Faye Macomber of Old Town and Marjorie Mayes of Lawton, OK; 4 granddaughters, Melissa Wallace, Michelle Hudson, Misty Tardiff, Porsche Linneman; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond, Richard and Arthur, seven sisters, Lucille Blackman, Evelyn French, Hilda Betters, Dorothy Huntington, Vera Mitton, Charlotte Sabine and Ann Rogerson. A cousin John “Birdie” Tardiff of Rumford who he thought of as a brother.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Monday March 26, 2018.
