Obituary for Paul W. Wheeler

GLENBURN- Paul W. Wheeler, 74, passed away on January 14, 2018 at a Bangor hospital. He was born September 20, 1943 in Portland, ME to Pearly Wheeler and Ruth (Walli) Parker. He graduated high school from Wilton Academy, class of 1961 and later attended Fort Kent Teacher’s College and the University of Maine at Farmington. In March of 1966, Paul joined the Army and in June of that year married Robin (Scott). Immediately after getting married, he attended WOC flight, school graduating in 1967. From 1968 to 1969, Paul served as a Gunship Pilot in the Vietnam War Theater, later returning for a second tour from 1970 to 1971. After his first tour, he accepted a Direct Commission to First Lieutenant. While in service, Paul was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He was a member of the Vietnam Pilots Association and the VFW. He retired from the Army and Civil Service in 1997 and upon his retirement, moved back to Maine where he worked for Maine Helicopter and was a Charter Pilot for Life Flight of Maine. During Paul’s active duty time, he earned his Civilian Fixed Winged Commercial License enabling him in time to be rated in single and multi-engine airplanes, helicopters, and instrument rated airplane and helicopter. Surviving, are his wife of 51 years, Robin Wheeler of Glenburn; one daughter, Cara Wheeler, of Kingfield; one grandson, Kevin Smith age 20, of Kingfield; one sister, Brenda Wheeler of Wilton; two step brothers, Alan Parker of Arkansas and Curt Parker of Jay and several nieces and nephews. Gifts in Paul’s memory may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Ave. Bangor, ME 04401. A memorial service for Paul will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 2, 2018 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor ME, with Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett officiating. A reception will follow at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. A private graveside will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery.
