Susan Atwood Warren
BANGOR - Mary Susan Atwood Warren, 80, passed away on Dec. 6, 2017, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine.
The daughter of John and Kathleen (Lynch) Atwood, she was born on Oct. 4, 1937, in Bangor. She and her younger sister, Kathleen (Constantine), grew up on West Broadway in Bangor in the house she subsequently lived in for most of her life. A circle of tight-knit neighborhood and Bangor friends were constants to the Atwood clan.
Susan was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1955, and Simmons College in Boston where she earned a degree in retail merchandising. She made many lifelong friends at both schools and greatly enjoyed attending the reunions.
Susan was, like her parents and sister, active in the Greater Bangor community. She was a member of the Junior League of Bangor, the Quipus Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Shakespeare Club and Friends of Acadia among others. She was proud to be a communicant of St. Mary's Parish and a supporter of the University of Maine.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, Richard K. Warren, they loved their homes in Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor, Maine; Sugarloaf; and Naples, Florida. Fond of entertaining and bringing people together, Susan often gathered friends and family to spend time in these special places. She continued her volunteer and committee activities outside of Bangor with Friends of Acadia in Bar Harbor and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine.
A lover of travel like her husband, they spent time exploring Europe, Russia, and the Caribbean among other places. Favorite destinations included Paris, Bermuda, and Petit St. Vincent. Traveling afforded Susan the opportunity to engage in one of her favorite past-times - shopping! Many have been the recipient of one of her thoughtful gifts, and though she wasn't known for her punctuality, she could always be counted on to be one of the best-dressed people in the room.
Susan was especially devoted to and is survived by her four children, John C. Thibodeau and his wife, Margaret, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; Deborah S. Walker and her husband, James, of Cornwall, England; Kathleen A. Warren of Natick, Mass.; and David M. Warren and his wife, Julie, of McKinney, Texas. She adored her three grandchildren, Patricia S. Thibodeau of Newport News, VA, and a Ph.D. candidate at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science; Mary A. Thibodeau of Cape Elizabeth and a senior at Rollins College; and Knox T. Warren of McKinney, Texas. She was a woman with high expectations and the drive to improve things in her community. These lessons have passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Susan is also survived by her sister, Kathleen (Atwood) Constantine, and husband, Joseph; niece, Meghan C. Fellis and husband, Craig; and great-niece, Kaya Constantine Bowler. She was predeceased by nephew, Joshua R. Constantine. She was also predeceased by her first husband, John J. Thibodeau.
