Elmer Raymond Hunting. Jr., 98, passed away on July 16, 2017, at the Maine Veteran’s Home, Bangor. He was born in Montpelier, VT. November 28, 1918, the first son of Elmer Raymond Hunting, Sr. and Barbara (Bryant) Hunting.
Elmer was brought up in Springfield, Vermont and was educated in the Springfield schools and at Northeastern University in Boston where he earned a BS degree in chemical engineering in 1942. He worked two years at the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, R.I. before entering the Marine Corps for two years in the Pacific Theater.
Elmer located in Madawaska, Maine in 1947 where he was employed by Fraser Paper Company, manufacturer of Fine and Groundwood papers.
In 1948 Elmer met and married Filomena “Mayna” Tarquinio in Barre, Vermont. They raised three children in Madawaska; Nicki, Richard and Roger, all of whom were educated in Madawaska schools and the University of Maine at Orono.
Elmer was a member of the American Legion Post #147 in Madawaska, and was a past President of the Madawaska Rotary Club. He also served on the board of directors of the Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent and of the Aroostook Mental Health Center in Caribou.
As an active family they took advantage of the opportunities offered in Northern Maine; hunting, fishing, skiing and snowmobiling.
Elmer retired from Fraser in 1983 after 36 years. He and Mayna moved from their home in Madawaska to a cottage on Long Lake where they lived for thirteen enjoyable years with their lakeside friends and neighbors. In October, 1992 they moved to Brewer, Maine to be closer to their daughter, Nicki and family who live in nearby Holden.
Elmer was a covenant member of the First Congregational Church of Brewer, UCC and a member of the choir and hand-bell choir.
Mayna died unexpectedly on December 20, 2001. Elmer was also predeceased by his only brother, Roger and twelve first cousins, being as they say, “the last man standing!”
He is survived by three children and their spouses; Nicki and David Ellis of Holden, Richard and Cynthia Hunting of Franklin, Va., Roger and Mary Hunting of Franklin, VA; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Ashley Ellis of Charlotte, NC, Brian Ellis of Denver, CO, Dana Hunting of Cincinnati, OH; two great grandchildren , Brady and Avery Ellis of Charlotte, NC.
At Elmer’s request, private interment services will be held in the family lot at the Plain-Mont Cemetery, Plainfield, VT.
