Obituary for Evarts T. Leighton

Bangor-Evarts T. Leighton passed away Feb 1, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Evarts was the only child of Vernon and Louise Leighton. He was born March 17, 1927 at Maine General Hospital.Being a healthy man his whole life, it was a sudden and brief illness that took him home to his Lord and Savior to whom he was forever faithful. He was a faithful member of Columbia Street Baptist Church and the Danforth Class. He also served on the communion committee, was a roll call officer and most recently a church librarian. He enjoyed playing the zither at church and especially liked road trips with the GOC's (Gods Older Children). Evarts began polishing jewelry in 1943 for his uncle Leo Sargent. He graduated from Bangor high school in 1945 and continued working in the jewelry business and took over the business in 1960 which he still recently owned until his death.Although he had no family, he had some very dear friends. One of his much cherished friends was Angie. He loved and looked after her and she did the same in return. Evarts read the Bible to her and helped her with her Bible study. He would often stop in after work and tell her a story or joke he heard that day. Evarts truly appreciated the generosity of Warren and JoAnne Smith as he stayed with them for a year during which time he truly became a member of the family. The one person who made his face light up when she walked in the room was JoAnne. She looked after him as if he were her only child. The love they had for each other was unconditional. The entire Smith family adopted him as their own and will miss him dearly along with everyone else whose path he crossed! The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at EMMC for their genuine care and concern on Evarts' behalf.
