Obituary for Walter Albert Washburn

Walter Albert  Washburn
Orrington-Walter A. Washburn, 87, passed away following a brief illness on January 28, 2017. He was born on February 25, 1929, in Ocoee, Florida,, the son of Robert H. Washburn and Alma McCurdy. He spent his early childhood in Brooklyn, New York. Walter moved to South Orrington, Maine, in 1936 and remained at the same Mill Creek residence for 75 years. His favorite pastime was caring for and beautifying that property on the Penobscot River. Upon graduating from Brewer High School, Walter, an avid sportsman, worked at Dakin Sporting Goods. He also worked for Acme Dunham and Harvey Distributing Company before starting his own business, Northeast Distributing Company, selling hardware throughout Down East Maine. He served in the Maine Army National Guard for 21 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant Major. His first call of duty came during the infamous 1947 Bar Harbor fire. He was a lifetime member of Ralph J. Pollard Masonic Lodge. Known as an avid storyteller, hunter, fisherman and woodsman, Walter was light on his feet and enjoyed dancing the jitterbug, waltz and foxtrot. He loved cribbage, wildlife and boating on Penobscot and Frenchman Bays. Most of all, he adored spending time with his friends and family. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased byhis beloved grandmother Agnes Washburn; his grandfather, Georg 'Georgie' Washburn, and his stepmother Kay 'Billie' Washburn. He will forever be cherished by his family, including his loving wife of 48 years Priscilla Crook Washburn of Brewer; daughters April Herbold and husband Seth of Eliot, Cindy Swift and husband Richard of Auburn and Debra Wedge and husband Michael of Hampden; grandchildren Dean Romprey and wife Jennifer of Fort Wayne, IN, Keith Romprey and wife Darcie of Bangor, Henry and Natalie Herbold, both of Eliot; two great grandsons, Gabriel aand Derick Romprey; brother Robert Washburn of Brewer; sister-in-law Betty Renaud of Brewer and several nieces and nephews.
