Obituary for Sandra Manée Hutchins ( )

Bangor - Sandra Manée Hutchins of Bangor, ME, passed away peacefully at her Sarasota, FL, residence on December 8, 2016, after a long illness. She was born on February 26, 1936, at Doctors Hospital in New York City, NY, the daughter of William Britton and Gladys (Agramonte) Manée. She was raised in Scarsdale, NY, spent many summers in Allenhurst, NJ, and enjoyed many vacations at the family compound in Cuba, where she met her husband, Christopher Hutchins. She was a 1954 graduate of Scarsdale High School and a 1956 graduate of Pine Manor Junior College (MA) and the Katherine Gibbs School. She made her debut at the 1954 Debutante Cotillion and Christmas Ball in New York City. She worked professionally for Sucony/Mobil in New York City prior to her marriage and move to Maine. She was a member of All Souls Congregational Church.
Sandy was on the boards of the Bangor YWCA, Bangor Symphony and Symphony Women, Bangor Theological Seminary, Maine Center for the Arts (now Collins Center for the Arts) at the University of Maine, and the Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor. She belonged to the Junior Leagues of Scarsdale, NY and Bangor, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club. At the request of Maine Governor John McKernan, she served on the Blaine House committee. An outstanding athlete, Sandy was one of the area's best tennis players, and won her first golf tournament at age 60. Sandy's enthusiasm for learning and love of travel took her to most of Europe, the continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica, South America, the Caribbean, and many places in the U.S., Canada, and Cuba.
Sandy was well known for her kindness, generosity, graciousness, and dignity. She epitomized elegance and grace and often hosted parties at her home. She embraced life and was devoted to her family. Her sons and grandchildren were sources of great joy through her life. Sandy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Christopher, of Sarasota, FL; her son, Charles Manée Hutchins and his wife Kelli, of Brewer, ME; her son J. Britton Hutchins and his wife Cara, of Prides Crossing, MA; and her grandchildren, Remington von Lengerke Hutchins and Lilia Tenbroeck Manée Hutchins, of Prides Crossing, MA. She is also survived by her brother Monte S. Manée and his wife Barbara of Scarsdale, NY; her nieces, Sandra Manée Evans and family of Greenwich, CT and Amanda Manée Aljian and family of Amston, CT. The family is grateful to the many caregivers who over the last eight years provided compassionate and outstanding care. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, and the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, master of divinity and minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor will be held immediately after the service.
