Obituary for Edward James Samuel Parent

Edward James Samuel Parent
HAMPDEN – Ed Parent, 77, died June 8, 2016 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born May 22, 1939 in Bangor, the son of Edward and Myra (Kidder) Parent.
Ed was a member of the Class of ’57 at Bangor High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. In July of that same year he married his high school sweetheart, Bonny Mansur. They would have celebrated 59 years of marriage this year. Ed was a 25-year veteran of the Army that included a tour of Vietnam in 1966 stationed in Cu Chi. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1979 and returned to Maine after posts in Korea, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Colorado, Hawaii, Germany and two locations in Virginia.
Ed is best known as the Toymaker of Maine. He and Bonny operated the Toymaker Shop in Ellsworth for more than 21 years and were privileged to meet and befriend many locals and summer visitors. He was a member of Masonic Mystic Lodge #65 in Hampden. Ed also spent time as part of the Veteran/Student Interview program at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor. He felt it important that he share his experience as a Vietnam Veteran so students better understood the realities of war and not be desensitized by the simulation of video games. The students often sent thank you notes thanking him for his service. He kept every one of them.
In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his brother, Richard. Surviving in addition to his wife, Bonny, are his son, Mark and his wife, Barbara of Winterport and his grandson, Christopher of Old Town; his sister, Donna and her husband, Vern of W. Burke, Vermont; his brother, James of Orrington; sister-in-law, Florence Jack of Parkville, MO, and brother-in-law, Bill Mansur of Bangor and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to a graveside service on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Hampden officiated by Pastor Steve Smith. The service will include a military honors salute.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Ed with a gift in his memory to Honor Flight Maine, PO Box 1770, Portland, Maine 04101-1770 or visit online at www.honorflightmaine.org.
