Obituary for Marian Jean Parent

MARIAN JEAN PARENT

BANGOR - MACWAHOC - Marian J. Parent passed away February 8, 2016, surrounded by loving family and friends at a local Bangor hospital. She was born in Passaic, New Jersey, the daughter of William and Margaret (Diener) Ingram. She grew up in Clifton, New Jersey and attended Clifton High School.

Marian enjoyed writing and when she was a senior in high school she was hired to write for the local newspaper, The Clifton Leader. She did interviews with various stars on and off Broadway in New York City.

Her family moved to Maine after she and her mother worked the summer at Lake Molunkus Sporting Camps. Her parents purchased Brookdale Farm in Macwahoc which was a Bed and Breakfast.

Marian continued writing and wrote the lyrics for a recording on The Starcrest label out of Hollywood, California. She was a Justice of the Peace and Notary Public for over 40 years. Her interests were singing at St. James Catholic Church in Kingman, dancing, traveling, crossword puzzles, reading novels, and writing. Anyone who knew Marian could count on receiving a hand-picked card just for them on special occasions.

She married Edgar Parent and enjoyed living on a farm in Macwahoc. That union brought three sons into the world. After many years, when their marriage ended, Marian moved to Bangor. She supported herself by being a Caregiver and a Nanny until 1981 when she was hired at Northeast COMBAT as a Consumer Caseworker. That lead to a 27 year career as one of the best consumer advocates in Maine and she moved up through the ranks to Assistant Director of Northeast COMBAT, running the office and the many volunteers and clients who walked through the doors. During her career at COMBAT many will remember her as helping them with their consumer issues and her lengthy career writing the weekly "Consumer Forum" column for the Bangor Daily News.

In 1991 she and her best friend, Marcia Bond, went on their first cruise to the Caribbean and from that moment on Marian was bitten by the cruise bug. In 1993, while on a cruise, she met an officer on board named Sukanda and they traveled to many countries and islands, such as Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and in the US - Hawaii and Alaska.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her fiancé Harry "Sandy" Balmforth Jr., Winterport, ME.

She is survived by three sons, Edgar and wife Vera of Peru, Ronald and wife Wendy of Mariaville, and James and wife Blanche of Macwahoc. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and their families - Sean, Heather, Trevor, Travis, Brandy, Jaime and Jason and further blessed with eight great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her dear friends, Marcia Bond Gurney, Ellie King, Joanne Zimmerman, D.J. Sawyer, Arlene Morin and the many residents and staff at Phillips-Strickland House.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember Marian in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Phillips-Strickland House, 21 Boyd Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
