Obituary for Ellen Bickford Farrell (Bickford)

Ellen Bickford Farrell (Bickford)
Hampden – Ellen B. Farrell, 89, died peacefully surrounded by her family February 5, 2016 at a Bangor nursing facility. She was born April 25, 1926, in Hodgdon, the daughter of Albert R. and Patience M. (Suitter) Bickford.

Ellen grew up in the Houlton/Hodgdon area in a family that she always said was reminiscent of “The Waltons”. She graduated from Houlton High School.

Ellen retired after 28 years from Merchants Bank, with most of those years as the head book keeper in the trust department. She belonged to a club called the Bear Paw Quilters, where she found her true calling – quilting. She taught many how to quilt. Anyone who was familiar with her quilts could always recognize them as she knew how to put colors together. Ellen liked to refer to herself as a “fabric artist”. She also enjoyed cross-stitch, crocheting, and knitting. Her hands were always busy … and never idle. She was a collector of fabric and yarn, and will be remembered for all the things she created. It was all about the quilts. Ellen also enjoyed watching the Red Sox and the Celtics.

In addition to her parents, and all 9 of her brothers and sisters, Ellen was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Richard E. Farrell. She is survived by daughter Leslie St. Louis and significant other Bobby Schmidt, and Susan Lee and husband David; step-daughters Linda Quigley and husband Don, Mary Ellen Farrell, Betsy LaBar and husband Lance, and Angela Davis and husband David; three grandchildren, Joseph St. Louis, Sarah Grant, and Ian Farrell Lee; seven step grandchildren; six great grandchildren, with one more on the way; several nieces and nephews; and her very dear friend, Wendy Cole.

Services will be private for the family. Those who wish to remember Ellen in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
