Obituary for William Trudell Lucy

ORONO – William T. Lucy, 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother died peacefully, July 12, 2015. Bill was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, October 5, 1934, the son of William P. and Marguerite (Trudell) Lucy.

Bill graduated from Leo High School in Chicago in 1952, and was recruited to Michigan State University on a football scholarship. He was forever a proud Spartan of MSU. Bill met the love of his life, Caroline (Bromley), at Michigan State, where he graduated in 1956 with a degree in economics. Bill and Carol married in 1957. Bill obtained his teaching credentials from the University of Detroit in 1959 and spent the next decade teaching and coaching in Michigan and Illinois. While working full time and raising a growing family, Bill worked nights to earn his M.Ed. from DePaul University in 1963. After a sabbatical year in Maine, Bill and Carol moved their family to Orono in 1969, where Bill earned his doctorate in education from the University of Maine in 1971.

For over twenty-five years until his retirement in 1996, Bill was known to generations of University of Maine students as “Dean Lucy.” As Associate Dean of Student Activities and Organizations, he worked closely with fraternities, sororities and other student organizations, and encouraged and supported student volunteerism and community service. Bill was a tremendous role model for all who knew him. He was as famous for his mentoring, friendly encouragement and wise counsel to students, as he was for his lifelong commitment to physical fitness and his bone-crushing handshake. Bill served the University on countless committees, and developed and taught courses in scuba diving and outdoor education and recreation.

Bill was a man of great faith, and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He cherished his time with family, took great joy in attending family activities and events, and was always up for new adventures. Bill combined his special blend of faith, humility, and kindness, with his indomitable spirit and determination in all things. His mental and physical toughness were legendary. Bill was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Bill is survived by his five children, William P. Lucy and his wife Lorilyn; Robert J. Lucy and his wife Miriam; Patricia A. Hettermann and her husband Kurt; John B. Lucy and his wife Allison; and James C. Lucy and his wife Kimberley; by his seventeen adoring grandchildren, Caitlin and her husband Paul, Carrie, Jennie, Chrissy, Chloe, Luke, Caroline, Jack, Annie, Cami, Michelle, Tom, Billy, Mark, Grace, Jenna, and Benjamin; by his much loved sister Carol Locascio and her husband Al; by his brothers-in-law Dr. William C. Bromley and his wife Julie, and George R. Bromley; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his parents, and by his wife Carol in 2002.
