Obituary for Barbara C. Smith

Bangor
Barbara C. Smith, 78, died peacefully June 28, 2015 at her home. She had a most positive attitude during her lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Barbara was born August 18, 1936 in Bangor, daughter of Leroy W. and Florence E. (Burns) Cole.
She was a 1955 graduate of Bangor High School, was class secretary and a cheerleader. She attended the University of Maine, and in 1982, she completed the Course of Study and Training, in the Professional Assistant Program at New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, Boston, MA. Barbara enjoyed her home in Rockport, her flower gardens and was a member of the Rockport Garden Club.
She was employed with New England Telephone Company, then worked in numerous capacities for many years at Brookings-Smith.
Barbara was co-founder and longtime supporter of Safe Place, a suicide support group for family and friends of survivors.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served on the altar guild, a member and past president of PEO Sisterhood, Chapter B, Bangor, Patawa Club, Junior League of Bangor, Tuscan Chapter #148, OES of Bangor and the Bangor Grange.
Surviving are, her high school sweetheart, and husband of 57 years, Gary W. Smith of Bangor; one daughter, Holly Smith Fernald and her husband, Jim, her very special granddaughter, Caroline Barbara Smith Fernald, all of Holden; two sisters, Jane C. Dickson and Patricia Cole, both of Bangor; brother-in-law, Richard Grotton and wife Barbara of Cape Elizabeth; a niece and several nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Joan C. Pederson and a nephew, Jeffrey J. Pederson.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday June 30, 2015, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday July 1, 2015 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 225 French St. Bangor, with the Rev. Canon Marguerite A. H. Steadman, rector, officiating. Private interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service.
