Richard Alan Fournier, 66, passed away at Togus Veterans Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Rick was the son of the late Arthur J. and Christine F. (Keenan) Fournier. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1967. Rick served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1974, including tours in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Upon returning, he worked a full career as a millwright at the Eastern Fine Paper mill in Brewer.
Rick is survived by his son Richard Arthur Fournier, wife Megan and very special grandson Nolan; brother Arthur Fournier and wife Lana of Texas, sister Sandra Reynolds of Portland, sister Christine Smith and husband Robin of Bangor, and sister Mary Ellen Dupuis and husband Michael of Old Town, aunt Joan Hansen and husband Albert of Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rick will be remembered for many qualities, including his great sense of humor, his intense love for the outdoors, and his devotion to family. He enjoyed sharing stories about hunting, fishing, and camping, and never shied away from a good political debate. Whether holding his grandson, fishing with his brother, or splitting wood in his backyard, he lived life purposefully; he created his happiness by surrounding himself with nature and the people he loved.
The family would like to thank staff and medical caregivers at Maine General Center, Augusta, at Home Health & Hospice Services, Bangor, and at Togus VA Hospice and Palliative Care Unit, Augusta, for their kindness and compassion while caring for Rick. A special thanks is extended to Rick’s close friends Deb and Steve for their devotion to Rick’s wellbeing.
Friends may visit with the family from 10-11 AM, Saturday, June 27, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, where a celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the interment.
