Obituary for Leona Jean McCluskey

ORONO - Leona Jean McCluskey, 76, passed away unexpectedly December 11, 2014 at her home. She was born in Bangor, May 22, 1938 to Bertha (Turner) King.

Leona attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School in 1957. She was employed by New England Telephone & Telegraph in the dial bureau and as a telephone operator for several years until she left to raise her two children, Timothy and Theresa McCluskey. She married Lawrence J. McCluskey in 1967.

Leona adored her two children and was the neighborhood mom to all of her children’s friends. Over the years, she made thousands of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and hundreds of gallons of Kool-Aid for her kids and their friends when they came in for lunch from playing outside. She was the world’s most devoted taxi driver as Tim and Theresa grew and participated in team sports. She attended countless baseball, softball, field hockey, football and basketball games and attended many other things as well. She was her kids’ biggest fan when cheering for the Orono Red Riots. She also was a devoted Red Sox and Patriots fan.

Leona was a woman of humor, loved to laugh and was certainly not afraid to tell you what she thought. After her children entered college, Leona started a second career at Boeing, Inc. in Bangor as a receptionist. A job she enthusiastically loved.

She was predeceased by her mother, Bertha (Turner) King in 1989. Surviving in addition to her husband of 47 years, Lawrence, are her two children, her son, Timothy McCluskey and his wife, Ann of Orono and her daughter, Theresa McCluskey of Portland and her significant other, Patrick Murphy. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Connor and Molly McCluskey.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 to 7pm Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, where funeral services will be held 11am Monday, December 15, 2014. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
