Obituary for Charlotte Jordan Skiff

Charlotte Jordan (Sherman) Skiff, 68, died peacefully November 6, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Charlotte was born July 15, 1946 in Bar Harbor, Maine to Ruth (Nelson) Sherman and William Edgar Sherman. Charlotte attended Bar Harbor High School and worked for her family business, FE Sherman. She took pride in being a part of a business that had meant so much to her father. She attended Nathaniel Hawthorne College and graduated with a sociology degree. In 1973 Charlotte met the love of her life, William Skiff.

Charlotte lived her life with strength, love, and compassion. Her strength was a trait that her children most admired and she was the heart of the family. Even in her most difficult moments she continued without complaint and remained focused on her family and their needs. Charlotte’s love for others flowed far beyond the walls of her family. She became a second mother to her children’s friends, opening her home and her heart. She also loved and cared deeply for the members of her community. For years she was president of the Hospital Auxiliary and committed to raise money for the hospital and help improve technology and care for patients of MDI. She started a Christmas star program that served two purposes. It allowed people to honor the special people in their lives and remember the ones they had lost. This Christmas star program was also a fundraiser for the Hospital Auxiliary. Charlotte started a cancer support group for the MDI hospital. She felt passionately that people should not be alone while battling and recovering from cancer. She also cared deeply about the people she worked with. As an employee of the hospital for over ten years she was greatly concerned about the needs of her colleagues. Charlotte’s heart and compassion for others was unquestionable.

Charlotte joins her husband William and leaves behind her daughters Lisa Skiff and husband Peter Alley, Sarah Skiff Dunbar and husband Lucas Dunbar, Jennifer Skiff and husband Jon Sainken, James Skiff, Catherine Skiff Hood and husband Sean Hood, and William Skiff Jr. She was a true grandmother at heart and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren who were devoted to her: William, Brady, Mallory, Phoebe, Lilly, Cassidy, Bryce, Mary, Jake, Parker, Riley, Taylor, Nate, Margaret, Gardner, Alice, and William Hamilton, A service in her memory will be held at the Congregational Church in Bar Harbor, Maine at 12pm on November 14th. Friends are invited to join the family afterwards at McKay’s Public House. Those who wish may make gifts in Charlotte’s memory to the MDI Hospital Auxiliary c/o MDI Hospital, Wayman Lane, Bar Harbor, Maine. A service of Brookings-Smith.
