Obituary for Donald O. Randall

Donald O. Randall, 83, passed away peacefully at his home in Bangor, September 12, 2014. He was born in St. Albans, June 20, 1931, the son of Leo and Phyllis (Hamilton) Randall.

Don was known for being a hardworking man of integrity. For much of his working life, he was employed as an ironworker, steelworker, and ran his own farm, before settling into the real estate business. In his retirement, he ran a number of apartment and boarding houses. Don was always trying to help his fellow workers, and in 1974, he became the President of the National Farmer's Organization in order to better represent the farm owners like himself.

Don was well-respected and well-liked by his community. He was self-disciplined and self-educated in the ways of business, which garnered him a natural respect from those around him. He was also a kind hearted man, one who grew extra vegetables in order to fill the tables of the less fortunate. Don tended to his large vegetable garden even into his 80’s. He stayed active by building a large garage and workshop. When he was a member of Bangor Baptist Church, he donated his time to help fix the leaky roof and cut firewood for the church furnace. Don found purpose in hard work. Don was a family man as well, he was very protective of his wife, Betty, and their children, he loved them all unconditionally and would continue to take care of them all, even into their adulthood. To his children, Don was the strongest and smartest man they knew. Don taught his grandchildren the value of hard work by his example. When they were young, he would help them with their homework with the kind of patience only a grandfather can give. Don will always be lovingly remembered by his family for his soft, calming voice and his twinkling blue eyes. As hard as it is to not see him anymore, his children know that his unwavering Christian faith means that they will see him again someday.

Don is survived by his wife, Betty Louise (Ferris) Randall of Bangor; his children, Dennis E. Randall and his wife, Claudette of Brunswick, David P. Randall and his wife, Lisa of Plymouth, and Deborah A. Greenwood and her husband, Michael of Pleasant View, TN; four grandchildren, Dawn Smith, Melanie Pearson, Sarah Hunter, and Sue Ann Abercrombie; six great grandchildren, Zander, Betty, Sophia, Bryn, Shelby and Moriah; two sisters, Mary Hill of East Corinth and Carol Jean Munson of Eddington. Don was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by his siblings, Ginny Bragdon, Leo "Junior" Randall, Vinal Randall, Polly Buzzell, Bob Randall, and Arlene Merry.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
