Obituary for Joan Ellen Poole (Laughlin)

BANGOR – Joan Ellen Poole, 81,went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 16, 2014, where she will be reunited with her beloved husband Alvie Ray Poole, who was called home September 1, 2001, and will be her Keeper of the Door and welcome her with love and open arms. Joan was born December 16, 1932, in Bangor, the daughter of Percy H. and Helena C. (Kearns) Laughlin.
Joan attended Bangor Schools including John Bapst High School. She married the love of her life A. Ray Poole on May 16, 1957. Joan was a loving mother, grandmother (Mimi), great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and one of the most caring persons you will find. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren meant the world to her. To know Joan was to love her. Joan was always there to lend a hand or offer her help, support, advice, and love wherever she was needed. She enjoyed painting, playing cards with her special friends, baking, planting and tending her flowers and bushes, and loved collecting knick knacks and items that were precious to her. She never lost her sense of humor no matter how much pain she was in and continued to fight until the very end. The last few months were so special to her because she was with her children, family and friends to which meant so very much to her and all of us.
Joan was employed for many years with the Bangor School Department as a cafeteria manager and loved her job as she was able to be with children and cook for them. She retired from the school department in 1996 when she was at Vine St. School. In her younger years she also worked for the telephone company as an operator and was also a local crossing guard for Bangor schools. Joan was also one of the first coordinators and fund raisers to bring the “Jaws of Life” to Bangor.
She is survived by two children, Richard Poole of Bangor and Renee Poole Danner of CA; four grandchildren, Erica Mae and her husband Josh Dupuis of Carmel, Jessica Rae Poole of Orrington, Ethan Ray Andreas Danner and Nathaniel Monroe Danner both of CA; three great grandchildren, Harley Jean Walton, Kaydence Beverly Walton and Taylor Joy Grant; a brother, William Laughlin of Levant; a special niece Karen Burns of Brewer and her special friend Linda King of Bangor for their great care of Joan; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; her cherished friends Jody Akerley, Rowena Bourgeois, Carol Ware, Mickie Tracy, Vicki Wilcox. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Alvie Ray Poole; brothers, Francis Burnett, Eugene, Kenneth, Robert and Thomas Laughlin; and sisters, Marguerite Robillard and Marie Thurston. The family would like to extend a special thank you for the exceptional care and support to Joan and her family to EMMC, BAVN and St. Joseph Hospital.
Mom won’t be far away, for life goes on as hard as it is, however if we need her, call, and she will come. Though Mom can’t see or touch us, she will be near, and if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear all of her love around us soft and clear. God has gained a beautiful angel in heaven.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be held privately for the family at a later date. Those who wish to remember Joan in a special way may make gifts in her memory to American Cancer Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086 or American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, Inc., 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074.
