Obituary for Donald Joseph Winslow

HERMON - Donald “Don” Joseph Winslow, 57, died peacefully at his home in Hermon, surrounded by the presence of God and his loving family on July 10th, 2014.

Don was born on February 9th, 1957 in Lewiston, Maine to the late Donald S. Winslow and Wanda (Walters) Winslow, who currently resides in Orono, Maine. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dora (Pelletier) Winslow; two daughters, Melissa Garcia and her husband Jason, and Meredith Brookings and her husband Bret; two sisters, Barbara Caron and Carol Winslow; and a brother Richard. He was predeceased by his oldest brother Rodney.

Don grew up in Old Town and graduated from Old Town High School in 1975. He began his public service career with the Old Town Fire Department in 1976. He attended the criminal justice program at Bangor Community College and joined the Bangor Police Department in 1979. In December of that year, he graduated from the 35th class of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He rose through the ranks of the department and became the 27th Police Chief in 1998. Throughout his career he was instrumental in spreading the DARE program throughout the state, served on numerous boards and civic organizations, most of which benefited less fortunate youth, and worked hard to curb domestic violence. In December of 1994 Don graduated with the 179th session of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He retired after 28 years with the department in February of 2007 to enjoy life at his camp on Sebec Lake with his family and beloved dog, Apollo.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4 to 7pm Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at The Gracie at Husson University, Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held 2pm Thursday, July 17, 2014 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor followed by the Rite of committal at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. A reception will follow at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spruce Run - Womancare Alliance, P.O.
