Obituary for Hilda Rose Goodstein (Markow)

BANGOR – Hilda R. Goodstein, died July 11, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born May 26, 1920, in New Haven, CT, the daughter of Henry A. and Ida (Goldstein) Markow.
Hilda graduated from Lyman Hall High School, Wallingford, CT, Class of 1938. She attended Larson College (Quinnipiac University). She married Benjamin Goodstein in 1942. Benjamin was in the Navy at the time of her marriage. After the war, Hilda and Benjamin resided in Hartford, CT, prior to moving to Bangor in 1948.
Hilda worked as a bookkeeper for North East bank prior to her retirement from the bank. Hilda was an active volunteer in the community. Hilda worked for many years as a gift shop volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. She was a member of the Board of Directors at Northeast Occupational Exchange from 1978 to 1998. Hilda volunteered at R.S.V.P. from 1983 to 1998. She served on the Board of Directors at the Treats Falls House for many years. Hilda also was an active board member at OHI for many years where her son Kenneth resided. Hilda was a member of the Sisterhood and Friendship Club at Congregation Beth Israel. She enjoyed going to weekly services. Hilda enjoyed doing needlepoint as evidenced throughout her home as well as knitting gifts for her children and grandchildren. Hilda was a warm and caring person and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin, as well as her six brothers and sisters. She was also predeceased by her son Kenneth. Surviving are her sons, Lawrence of Bangor, and Henry and his wife, Josephine of Newnan, GA; two grandchildren, Anastasia Belford and her husband, Ian of New York City, and Rebeca Wilkins and her husband, Sean of Ashburn, VA; three great-grandchildren, Sammi Belford, Evan Wilkins, and Connor Wilkins, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place 4 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor, with the Rabbi Bill Siemers, officiating. Interment will follow at the Beth Israel Cemetery with a short graveside service. The family invites relatives and friends to join them to sit shiva at 196 Fountain St. Bangor, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., with services at 7 p.m. The family request no flowers be sent.
